I hadn’t realized how much I’ve come to enjoy this series until I picked up the book. I was immediately lost in the world of 1890’s New York City, and Sarah and Frank are outstanding guides. They lead a cast of strong characters, and I love watching them interact and their slow burn romance. I did figure some things out early, but I was still glued to the page as there were twists and complications I didn’t see coming.

This historical mystery series just keeps betting better. Set in turn-of-the twentieth century New York City and replete with historical details, it the features the two main characters in the series, Sarah Brandt, a Knickerbocker debutante turned midwife, and Irishman Frank Malloy, a New York City Police Department Detective Sergeant. Once again, they team up to solve yet another mystery.

This time, the mystery strikes close to home, as it involves the son of her elderly neighbor, Mrs. Ellsworth, who is a likable and familiar secondary character in the series. When Mrs. Ellsworth's banker son, Nelson, is accused of a crime that he did not commit, Sarah Brandt gets Frank Malloy involved, and the two of them find themselves immersed in solving a crime in which the victim may actually have been the victimizer. Things are simply not as they first seem.

This is a well-written series, and the main characters are fully fleshed. Fans of the series will note that in this book, Sarah and Frank are feeling romantic twinges towards one another but, consistent with the social mores of the times, theirs is still a passion denied. One finishes reading this book, looking forward to reading the next one in the series. Those who enjoy reading historical fiction and mysteries will find that this series perfectly melds these two genres.
This is a quick and engaging read. Despite the grit and grime of the underbelly of turn of the century NYC, this series has its charm. Not great literature, but oddly addicting. A pleasant read for an easy afternoon. I love the development of Mrs. Ellsworth as a viable character in the series. Malloy's and Sarah's cautious tippy-toe towards romance is a fun side story.
Ms. Thompson has the amazing ability to put the reader smack into the actual time period of her excellent series, this book is truly an example of this.

Nurse, Midwife, and amateur sleuth, Sarah Brandt is summoned by her next door neighbor to aid him in a personal emergency. Although the man has offered his hand in marriage to a girl he has dishonored, she refused him and only wants money. This seems off and the neighbor, Mr. Ellsworth decides to get confirmation of the girl's 'condition.'

After a dramatic scene, Sarah washes her hands of the entire affair, until the woman is found stabbed to death under the hanging tree in Washington Square.

Sarah rushes to Detective Malloy, who is one she trusts in a corrupt organization, and begs his help.

The book marches on to uncover blackmail schemes, brothels, and a shocking ending.

Each book in this series is better than the last one. Take time and collect all of them and then read them one by one in order. There is even a delicious romance. Plus history of the early 1900's in New York City.
I'm a fan and ever since I read the first Gaslight Mystery, I can't put them down.
However, something has been bothering me about this one. Mr Giddings was perfectly sober, properly dressed, afraid that his wife might discover he'd become a cheater, and presented his card as still working for the law firm rm two days after Anne Blake's body was found. And yet, as the story evolves, we find a Mr Giddings who had already lost his job, lost his wits to the bottle to the point that he spent he night of the murder in jail, and his family had already been forced to sell all their belongings to pay back his embezzlement. So... who was the real Mr Giddings?
Anna Blake is a con artist who seduces wealthy men, convinces them she is pregnant and then blackmails them. When she’s found murdered, Sarah’s neighbor Nelson Ellsworth is among the leading suspects. But Sarah knows that Nelson isn’t the killer, and she sets out to prove it.
These gaslight mysteries are always entertaining, but wouldn’t all those wealthy men coming and going from a middle class boarding house run into each other? And if Anna took as much cash from other “victims” as she seems to have taken from Gilbert Giddings, she would have retired to a country estate months ago.
In this historical mystery, Sarah (a midwife and a widow) and Frank Malloy (a New York detective and widower) team up to solve the murder of a young woman, slain one night under the hanging tree in Washington Square. Once again, their teamwork struggles to find its way Sarah wants to help free the man accused of the crime; he is, after all, the son of her neighbor; Frank wants to convince Sarah that he wants to find the guilty man and that he needs to keep her safe.
Thompson’s description of early New York, with its quick divisions between the rich (both new and old) and the impoverished newcomers, is full of fascinating details. [My ancestors were part of the latter society, and it’s interesting to better understand the barriers and limitations that they faced. Moreover, the setting of this book is a section of New York where I spent many hours, sitting around and absorbing the crowds that are the substance of Washington Square. And the wonderful Strand Bookstore which took many of my hours (and dollars)].
