When first told of the two book, honestly, I was not very interested. A buddy lent me the first of the two, which I devoured within days. The second book,"The Promise" co continued the dynamic character development that was started in "The Choice". The compelling story kept me constantly wanting more. As one question's answer was revealed, another was posed. As a Jew, I found this book to be insightful and enlightening. I will recommend this book, as well as it's predecessor to my both Jewish and gentile friend. This a story that anyone could relate to; no matter their background.

The Promise Chaim Potok 9781400095414 Books Reviews
20th century American classic. Expert and masterful characterization. Spiritual and emotional conflicts portrayed against the background of Jewish conservatism versus Hasidic culture and beliefs. No sexual content or overt violence. Psychological conflicts of parents with a child who is disturbed. Obviously, very complex story structure.
Outstanding novel. I picked this book up at the book carousel at Cam Rahn Bay in late 1960s and couldn't put it down. Stayed up all night reading it and have since reread it a few times. Chaim Potok is/was an outstanding story teller.
The one thing that I really liked about this book was that it brought the lives of Jewish families more out in to the open as I learned more about what their ways were like. The one thing that I did not like about this story was that there were secrets that were kept under cover until the very end of the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes learning about older Jewish literature and family-friendly stories. I really enjoyed reading this book and what it had to offer to me.
I fell into the world of Danny and Reuben in The Chosen. I searched for more and found this sequel of the two friends as they chose and began careers and made life choices in their early 20s. This is an exquisitely written book--straightforward yet profound in its descriptions and explanations of various Jewish sects and beliefs. How I wish Potok had written more books of these characters.
Not as great as the first book, The Chosen, in my opinion, but a very good follow-up nonetheless. Honestly, I've found that all of Chaim Potok's books have been worth my while.
I read this book a while ago and really don't remember all of it. But in reading the outline under the book title I could recall a lot of the book. This author is one of my favorites and this book didn't disappoint. I enjoyed the main character's and their families and how they found ways to help each other. Very much like the "Chosen" and how the Rabbi spoke through the boys. Chaim Potok always captures my interest. I would recommend this book to other readers.
Chaim Potok is one of my all time favorite writers. I have read this book multiple times along with its predecessor The Chosen. I love the character development in these books, the presentation of Jewish history, and the dilemmas people face when their faith doesn't sync with reality and how they resolve such a dilemma. Chaim Potok does this very well.
